If you run a small business, you have probably tried at least one tool to make posting easier. A scheduler, a template app, a content calendar. Each one promised to save you time. And each one left you with the same job: decide what to say, write it, find a picture, pick a moment and press the button.

The tool changed where you do the work. It did not change whether you do it. If your diary is already full, that is why the posting still doesn’t happen.

Why tools leave the time problem where it was

Posting is a chain of small jobs: choosing a topic, writing a draft, making a graphic, checking it sounds like you, and publishing it. Most tools speed up one or two links in that chain. You are still holding the rest of it.

That works in a quiet week. In a busy week, the chain breaks at the first link, and the tool sits unused until you feel guilty enough to open it again. That is not a lack of discipline. For most owners the problem was never a shortage of ideas. It is a shortage of time.

A useful test is this: after you have set the tool up, who is still doing the work every day? If the answer is you, then you have bought a better way to do a job you don’t have time for.

What “done for you” looks like in practice

The alternative is a service that does the job and leaves you only the decision. Here is how that works with YorDigital Presence.

Each morning an email arrives with one finished post and a graphic to match, written in your own voice. You read it between meetings. If it is right, you reply “yes”. If it isn’t, you reply with something like “no, because it sounds too formal”, and a better version comes back. Presence learns from what you say, so the next one starts closer to the mark.

Once you have connected your accounts, approved posts go out automatically. You don’t copy anything across, set a schedule or open another app. The part that remains yours is the part only you can do: deciding whether it sounds like your business.

That decision takes a few seconds. Writing, designing and publishing the same post by hand takes far longer, and it is the part that gets skipped.

How to tell whether something does the work or only helps with it

Whether you are looking at Presence or anything else, a few plain questions will tell you where the work really sits:

  • Who writes the first draft? If it is you, the writing is still on your list.
  • Who makes the graphic? If you have to find or build it, that is another job on your list.
  • What do you have to do each day, and how long does it take? The honest answer should be a decision, not a task.
  • What happens in a week you ignore it? A service that stops when you stop is still depending on you.
  • Does it learn from your feedback? If you correct the same thing every week, you are doing the editing for ever.
  • Can you leave? Monthly, with no contract, means you can judge it on what it does.

To be fair, tools suit some people. If you enjoy writing and have the hours, a good scheduler may be all you need. This is for the owner who knows what they should be doing online and simply can’t fit it in.

We run it on ourselves first

We don’t ask anyone to try something we haven’t used. YorDigital Presence runs YorDigital’s own social pages, and the posts that come from it are the ones you see there. The same approach already produces daily social content for an estate agency. We have been building for the web since 2001, and we would rather learn the awkward lessons on our own pages before they reach yours.

There are no customer figures to quote yet, and we won’t make any up. What we can say is how it works and what it costs. Every customer starts with a free plan. After that, it is priced by how often you post: from £49 to £99 a month for a professional or a creator, and from £99 to £499 a month for a business. The free plan recommends a level, with the evidence behind it, and says so when less would do. It is monthly, with no contract.

The decision is the point

A full diary doesn’t need another thing to manage. It needs the work taken off it, with you keeping the final say. One post, one graphic, one word back. That is a realistic amount of effort for a busy week.
